Customized Light by DC

The commissioner Afvalzorg has a scoop with project; this is the first modern and sustainable DC smart grid in the Netherlands that is installed on an industrial park. The DC smart grid has been developed by Direct Current BV in cooperation with CityTec.

"The LED lighting in DC can be dimmed very well without sacrificing light quality," explains Geert Meijer, director of CityTec. In the event of a disaster or increased activity, the light level can be turned up with a push of a button. "This was demonstrated at the official opening by Mr. John Nederstigt, alderman of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. On behalf of the province of North Holland, deputy Jan van Run was present. Both the municipality and the province were closely involved in this project and have helped to make this possible.

Sustainability

Bert Krom, Director of Afvalzorg (Waste Care), commented: "We are always looking for innovative and sustainable solutions. In this project we have weighed various interests and we arrived at a positive outcome for both the environment and for Afvalzorg. We are also proud that we are the first company where public lighting is replaced by sustainable LED lighting powered by DC. The old lighting had a consumption of 90W but the new LED lights a maximum of 60W. At any time, the lighting can be dimmed to 20W. As a result, we consume 71% less energy, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by 11,559 kg annually. Moreover, it is a nice and pleasant light."
